We are looking for one or two driven individuals who want to explore how AI models can be used to automate testing of our complex software application.
Your role
Background
Testing of the Gripen fighter aircraft is to a large extent conducted in simulators and rigs, where the flight test pilots can evaluate functions and systems in the aircraft. The test environment includes a simulated tactical environment with terrain, other aircraft, ground vehicles etc. Manual testing of the tactical environment simulation is time-consuming, but is difficult to automate as it involves many different component and test verdicts based on object detection and recognition. AI models such as ChatGPT from Open AI or Gemini from Google are now presented as capable of testing software based on a textual prompt, but how can AI models be integrated in the testing of a large-scale and complex application involving image processing and object detection?
Description of the master thesis
This MSc thesis aims at evaluating and demonstrating how AI models can be used to automate testing of a complex software application such as a simulated tactical environment with terrain and autonomously moving objects. The study shall include a study of related previous work, interviews with senior engineers in software development at Saab Aeronautics, and evaluation using one or several existing AI/ML-based frameworks.
Your profile
This Master Thesis is suitable for one or two students, with interest in software development and software testing. You are at the end of your Master of Science in e.g. Computer Science and Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management, or Information Technology and about to start your Master Thesis work for 30 HP.
This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
What you will be a part of
You will be part of the Tactical Environment Simulation section, which supplies tools and components to Saab throughout the entire product lifecycle. We work from early evaluation of future capability, during the development of Gripen, among other things, and enable training capability for the pilots in our simulators. We help Saab to simulate the future!
The section currently consists of around 20 people. You will be part of a team where different experiences meet in an environment that is bubbling with energy and different perspectives. With us, you will be part of the development of a tool for tactical environment simulation that is used in all phases of the Gripen weapon system. Tactical environment simulation is a central part of Saab’s simulators and rigs for concept development, marketing, development, validation and training.
